How to Bleed a Radiator and Check Your Boiler Pressure

Radiators that gurgle, hiss or feel cold at the top are more than just annoying. They can make your heating less efficient and push your boiler to work harder. Bleeding a radiator is usually a quick fix, but on a sealed system you need to manage boiler pressure carefully to avoid new problems.

Reasons radiators need bleeding

Air can build up in your heating system over time, especially after work on the pipework, a system drain down or if there is a small leak. This trapped air rises to the top of radiators and stops hot water circulating properly.

The result is radiators that are hot at the bottom and cool at the top, or noisy systems that gurgle and hum. You might also notice rooms taking longer to warm up, even though your boiler is running as normal.

Bleeding removes that trapped air so hot water can fill the whole radiator again. On a sealed system, each bit of air you let out also releases some pressure, so keeping an eye on your boiler gauge is essential.

What that hissing sound really means

When you open a radiator bleed valve, the first thing you usually hear is a sharp hissing. That sound is air escaping from the radiator under system pressure. It is a good sign that you are actually releasing trapped air.

As the air comes out, the system pressure drops slightly. On a sealed system, that pressure is shown on the boiler gauge, typically aiming for around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. Bleeding too many radiators without checking the gauge can drop it low enough that the boiler will not fire.

  • If you hear hissing followed by water, you are bleeding correctly

  • If you get only water immediately, there may be little or no air in that radiator

  • If nothing comes out, the valve may be blocked or stuck and you should avoid forcing it

Once the hissing stops and a steady stream of water appears, that radiator is usually clear of air and the valve should be closed promptly.

Step by step: how to bleed a radiator on a sealed system

1. Turn the heating off and let the system cool

Switch your heating off at the programmer or boiler controls and wait until the radiators are cool to the touch. This reduces the risk of burns and gives a more accurate boiler pressure reading.

Check the pressure gauge on your boiler while it is off and cold. Note the reading, as you will compare it again after bleeding. Most sealed systems are comfortable around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, but always check your boiler manual for the correct range.

2. Protect flooring and get your tools ready

Have a radiator key, an old towel and a small container or jug to catch any water. Place the towel under the radiator end with the bleed valve to protect carpets or flooring.

Most bleed valves are at the top corner of the radiator. They typically have a small square peg in the middle that fits a standard radiator key.

3. Open the bleed valve slowly

Insert the radiator key into the valve and turn it anti-clockwise just a quarter to half turn. Do this slowly and carefully. You should hear the hissing of air escaping almost immediately.

Hold your container under the valve to catch any drips. Do not remove the valve entirely, as this can release water rapidly and cause a mess.

4. Catch the water and close the valve

Keep the valve open until the hissing stops and a steady, even stream of water flows out. This means the air is gone and the radiator is full of water again.

As soon as the flow is steady, turn the valve clockwise to close it firmly, but without over-tightening. Wipe any drips away and check that no water is weeping from the valve.

5. Repeat across the home in a sensible order

Work methodically around your home, usually starting with the radiators on the ground floor and then moving to higher levels. Bleed each radiator that feels cold at the top or that you know has air in it.

Do not rush and avoid opening lots of valves at once. Each radiator released will drop system pressure a little, so you want to keep control and know roughly how many you have done.

6. Check boiler pressure and top up only if confident

Once you have finished bleeding, go back to your boiler and check the pressure gauge with the system still cold. If the reading has fallen slightly but is still within the recommended range in your manual, you may not need to do anything.

If the pressure has dropped below the minimum recommended level, you may need to top up using the filling loop. Only do this if you are confident and have read the boiler manual first, as incorrect topping up can damage the system or trigger safety valves.

The basic idea is to slowly open the filling loop valves and watch the gauge rise, then close the valves as soon as you reach the correct cold pressure. Never leave the filling loop open and do not exceed the upper recommended pressure.

Mistakes that lead to pressure problems

Most pressure issues after bleeding come down to a few common errors. Being aware of them makes it much easier to avoid future trouble.

  • Bleeding lots of radiators in one go without checking the gauge, which can drop pressure below the point where the boiler will run

  • Not fully closing a bleed valve, leaving a slow leak that steadily drains pressure and stains the radiator

  • Topping up the boiler too high, which can trigger the pressure relief valve and dump water outside

If you notice water dripping from the copper pipe outside near your boiler after topping up, the pressure relief valve may have opened. You should reduce pressure back to a normal level and consider asking an engineer to check the system.

When to call an engineer instead

Some issues are better handled by a professional, especially where safety or potential damage is involved. If any of the following apply, it is wise to stop and seek help.

If a bleed valve is stuck, rounded off or starts turning the whole radiator fitting, do not force it. Heavy force can break the valve or damage the radiator, leading to leaks that need urgent repair.

Corrosion or green or brown staining around bleed points suggests a slow, ongoing leak. This can allow air into the system and steadily drop pressure. An engineer should inspect and replace components where needed.

Repeated air build-up in the same radiators, especially combined with ongoing pressure loss, can point to a small system leak or expansion vessel problem. This should be investigated properly rather than constantly bleeding and topping up.

Keeping your system healthy

Bleeding radiators correctly is a useful skill for any homeowner, but it is only one part of looking after a sealed heating system. Regular servicing can catch pressure issues, leaks and safety concerns before they become bigger problems.
