Radiator Valves Explained: TRVs, Lockshields & Common Problems

Radiator valves control how much heat each radiator gives out and how evenly warmth is shared around your home. If a radiator stays cold, needs tapping before it warms up, or one room feels much hotter than the rest, the valves may be involved.

This guide explains thermostatic radiator valves, often called TRVs, and lockshield valves in plain language. It also covers safe checks you can carry out before deciding whether to book a professional radiator repair or heating service.

What does a thermostatic radiator valve do?

A TRV is the numbered control fitted to one side of many radiators. It senses the temperature of the room and adjusts the flow of hot water through the radiator. A higher setting allows more heat into the room, while a lower setting reduces the flow once the room reaches the selected temperature.

The numbers are not usually exact temperatures. As a general guide, a setting around 3 may provide a comfortable living space, although the best setting depends on the room, radiator size and insulation. Avoid covering the TRV with curtains or furniture, as trapped warm air can make it sense the wrong temperature.

  • Turn the TRV towards a higher number if the room is too cool.

  • Turn it towards a lower number for bedrooms, hallways or rooms used less often.

  • Keep the valve clear so air can circulate around its sensor.

  • Do not force the control if it feels stiff or will not turn.

What is a lockshield valve?

The lockshield valve is usually found at the opposite end of the radiator from the TRV. It is designed to regulate the return flow of water and is normally adjusted during radiator balancing, then covered with a cap to prevent accidental changes.

Unlike a TRV, a lockshield is not intended for everyday temperature control. If it is fully closed, hot water may not pass through the radiator, leaving it cold. If it is opened too far compared with other radiators, that radiator may take more than its fair share of flow while others struggle to warm up.

Common radiator valve problems

TRV stuck open or closed

A TRV can stick after being left on one setting for a long period, particularly after the heating has been switched off during summer. If the head turns but the radiator remains cold, the small metal pin underneath may be stuck in the closed position. If the radiator stays hot even when the TRV is set low, the valve may be stuck open or the head may no longer be operating the pin correctly.

For a clip-on or screw-on TRV head, you may be able to remove only the head by following the manufacturer’s instructions. With the head removed, the small pin should move down and spring back up gently. You can carefully press it a few times to free it, but do not pull it out, twist it or use excessive force.

Radiator only warms after tapping the valve

A light tap may temporarily release a sticking mechanism, but it is not a proper repair. Repeated tapping can damage the valve or hide a problem that eventually leaves the radiator cold. Check the TRV setting first, then arrange a repair if the issue returns.

Loose TRV head

A loose valve head may not press the internal pin correctly, so changing the number has little effect. Check whether the retaining ring, clip or fixing screw has come loose, but do not dismantle the valve body. A replacement TRV head may solve the problem if the valve itself is still in good condition.

One room overheats while others stay cold

This often points to unbalanced radiators, where hot water takes the easiest route through one or two radiators. It can also be caused by a TRV stuck open, a lockshield set incorrectly, trapped air, sludge or a circulation problem. Checking radiator balance can help, but changing valves at random may make the system less even.

Safe checks you can carry out

Start by making sure the heating is on and give the system time to warm up. Check that the TRV is set high enough, and compare the temperature of the pipes and radiator surface carefully, as hot metal can burn.

If you are comfortable doing so, check that the lockshield has not been fully closed. Remove only its decorative cap and make small adjustments, recording the original position so it can be restored. Never undo the valve body, loosen compression nuts or drain the heating system unless you are properly equipped and know exactly what you are doing.

When to arrange professional help

Book a repair or service if a radiator will not heat after the basic checks, remains hot when the TRV is turned down, or needs repeated tapping. Professional attention is also sensible if the valve leaks, the pin will not move gently, the system pressure changes, or several radiators are affected.
