What to Expect on the Day of Your Boiler Installation

Getting a new boiler installed is a big step toward improving your home’s energy efficiency and comfort. But what actually happens on installation day? Whether you’re replacing an old unit or upgrading your entire heating setup, knowing what to expect helps the day go smoothly and gives you peace of mind.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Boiler Installation

What happens during a boiler installation?

Boiler installations typically take one to two days, depending on the complexity of the job and whether you’re switching boiler types. Your installer should have already carried out a pre-installation survey to assess your property and confirm the best boiler model for your needs.

Here’s how the day usually unfolds:

Arrival and safety checks

Your installer will arrive with all necessary equipment and confirm the job details with you. Before anything is removed, they’ll isolate the gas and water supply and run key safety checks. If you have pets or small children, it’s a good idea to keep them out of the work area for the day.

Removing the old boiler

The first major task is safely disconnecting and removing your existing boiler. This includes draining the system, detaching pipework, and responsibly disposing of the old unit. If the installation includes relocating the boiler, additional pipework adjustments will also begin at this stage.

New boiler fitting and pipework

Once the old unit is out, the engineer will begin fitting your new boiler and adjusting pipework to suit. This can include the gas line, water pipes, flue system, and any necessary condensate drainage. Modern boilers often require updated fittings to meet current regulations.

System flushing (if included)

In many cases, your installer will carry out a system flush or powerflush to clean out any sludge or debris from your radiators and pipework. This protects your new boiler from future damage and helps it run more efficiently.

Wiring and control setup

The next step involves connecting your boiler to the thermostat, smart controls, and any safety systems like carbon monoxide detectors. For combi boilers or smart-enabled systems, the engineer will guide you through how to use and program your heating controls.

Testing and commissioning

After everything is connected, the boiler will be tested to ensure proper function. This includes checking gas pressure, water flow, and heating performance. The engineer will also register your boiler with the manufacturer and issue the relevant documentation.

Handover and final checks

Before leaving, your installer will talk you through how to operate the system, what maintenance is required, and what to do if any issues arise. You’ll also receive a benchmark certificate and warranty information to keep for your records.
